YoungMinds is a charity that aims to stop young people’s mental health reaching crisis point.
- 1 in 6 children aged five to 16 were identified as having a probable mental health problem in July 2020.
- Fewer than 1 in 3 young people with a mental health condition get access to NHS care and treatment.
- 80% of young people with mental health needs agree that the Covid-19 pandemic has made their mental health worse.
YoungMinds provides support and guidance on its website, through social media and through its Parents’ Helpline service. It also gives a voice to young people by campaigning for change. YoungMinds strongly believes in putting young people at the heart of what it does and to this end it has appointed young people to its board.
The board is supported by a youth panel, which upholds young people’s participation across the organisation and in governance, helping to shape the strategy and inputting into board meetings.
“YoungMinds strongly believes in putting young people at the heart of what it does and to this end it has appointed young people to its board.”
Campbell Tickell brief
Campbell Tickell first began working with YoungMinds in 2021, undertaking a support role with the Chair and CEO, together with a board evaluation. Subsequent to that evaluation, CT ran sessions with the board and executive team and helped support training for potential new trustees on the role and expectations of YoungMinds.
- Key to our approach has been close communication with YoungMinds. As part of the evaluation work, we held regular meetings with the Chair, Chair of People and Governance, and the CEO as part of the evaluation work.
- After the board evaluation, CT worked with YoungMinds to deliver an online presentation to people who expressed an interest in becoming a trustee. This outlined what it means legally to be a trustee, but also what it means to be a YoungMinds trustee and the support that is offered to anyone joining the board.
- We also worked with the organisation on shaping the expectations of committees and committee Chairs, and on how the executive and board interact with each other.
